The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted full accreditation to the College of Health Sciences at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), allowing it to continue running its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.
During an accreditation visit to FUTA on Wednesday, an MDCN team led by Deputy Registrar Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma approved the programme and set an admission quota of 100 medical students.
Nwakanma said he was impressed with the university’s level of preparedness. He described the engagement as productive and stressed the need for the College to maintain operations in line with the Council’s regulatory standards. He added that MDCN is committed to guiding institutions through accreditation and ensuring Nigerian medical and dental education meets global best practices.
As part of the exercise, the delegation carried out a thorough inspection of facilities across the College of Health Sciences. The review included departments in Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences — specifically Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Physiology, Community Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Microbial Pathology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics. These departments are key to clinical training, bridging basic sciences and patient care.
The team also visited FUTA Teaching Hospital, where they were welcomed by Chief Medical Director Professor Olusegun Ojo.
Professor Biodun Olagbuji, Provost of the College, and Deputy Provost Professor Victor Ukwenya gave the delegation an overview of the College. They outlined its enabling statute, organogram, and operating guidelines, noting that the structure was designed to integrate preclinical and clinical training while maintaining administrative efficiency. They stated that the facilities and framework are intended to meet MDCN requirements and fulfill the College’s mandate to produce competent health and medical professionals.
