The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), has welcomed a team from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on an accreditation visit to the Food Engineering and Petroleum and Gas Engineering programmes of the School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology (SIPET). The visit commenced on Monday, 8 June 2026, at the Academic Publishing Centre, Main Campus.
Speaking during the opening meeting, the Team Lead, Prof. John A. Olorunmaiye of the University of Ilorin, stated that the exercise was aimed at assessing the quality and standards of the two engineering programmes. He noted that accreditation remains one of COREN's core mandates in ensuring quality assurance and producing engineering graduates who are competent, innovative, and capable of addressing the challenges of a rapidly evolving society.
Prof. Olorunmaiye explained that concerns have been raised regarding the gap between the skills acquired by engineering graduates and industry expectations. To address this challenge, COREN has adopted Outcome-Based Education (OBE), an approach designed to bridge the disconnect between classroom learning and professional practice.
He further stressed that the accreditation exercise is intended to promote continuous improvement and quality delivery rather than serve as a fault-finding mission. According to him, the composition of the accreditation team, which includes both academics and industry professionals, reflects COREN's commitment to a balanced and objective assessment process. He therefore appealed for the cooperation and support of the University community throughout the exercise.
Responding on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Uno Essang Uno, welcomed the COREN team to FUTMINNA and expressed appreciation for their commitment to enhancing engineering education in the country. He assured the team of the University's readiness to provide all necessary support and encouraged them to offer constructive recommendations that would further strengthen the programmes under review.
Other members of the accreditation team include Engr. Prof. M. S. Abubakar of Bayero University, Kano; Engr. Edeth Y. Ishidi of Sheda Science and Technology Complex, Abuja; Engr. Jude Zhidaya of COREN, Abuja; Mrs. Ngozi Awunde of COREN, Abuja; Engr. Anthony Onunka of Hex Engineering and Consultancy Limited, Abuja; and Mrs. Rahilah E. Umar of COREN, Abuja.
