Education Minister Tunji Alausa announced a plan to give students 100MB of free data every day starting October 1.
The data will only work on approved educational websites.
The rollout begins with secondary schools and tertiary institutions including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other post-secondary schools.
MTN, Glo and Airtel are partnering with the Federal Government to provide the service, with Glo named as a key provider.
According to the Minister, no Nigerian student should miss out on quality education because they can’t afford data. The idea is to turn phones and tablets into smart classrooms.
At the same time, the government says it will also introduce rules to regulate internet access for children under 16.
